Joseph’s Disclosure

1. What caused Joseph to finally reveal (disclose) himself to his brothers? / Genesis 45

Joseph witnessed genuine remorse and change on the part of Judah and his brothers.  cf. Gen.44:14ff

  Describe this very emotional moment. – vs.1

  How loudly did he weep tears of joy? – vs.2

How might Joseph have gone about proving his true identity? – vss.3-4

  Family history, stories and secrets.

  He was most likely circumcised (not something one would expect for an Egyptian man).

  Only he would have known that they had THEY HAD SOLD HIM? – vs.4b

2. How did Joseph explain the events of the last two decades?

Do not be grieved or angry with yourselves…for GOD SENT ME BEFORE YOU to preserve life. – vss.5 & 7

  It was not YOU who sent me here, but GOD. – vs.8a

  God made Joseph “lord” of Pharaoh’s household - - “lord of all Egypt”. – vss.8b & 9

3. What charge did Joseph give his brothers?

Hurry home, without delay, and bring back the entire family! – vss.9 & 13

  How many years of famine yet remained? – vss.6 & 11

How Joseph send them off?   

  With hugs, kisses and tears! – vss.14-15

How did Pharaoh expedite Joseph’s retrieval of his family? – vss.17f

  Loaded with supplies … wagons for the return trip … changes of garments … ten donkeys with Egypt’s finest good.

  What promise did Pharaoh make? – the best of all the land of Egypt is yours (vs.20).

  What does the response of Pharaoh and his house to this announcement say about Joseph himself? – vs.16

Is it safe to conclude that Pharaoh held Joseph in highest esteem?

What was Joseph’s farewell exhortation to his brothers? – vs.24

  In light of such good news, what might the brothers have to quarrel about?

  Did his brothers have a latent fear about what Joseph might eventually do to them? – cf. Gen.50:15-21

4. Describe Jacob’s response to the news about Joseph? 

Was he at first taken aback - - stunned and skeptical? – vs.27a 

  Did the accompanying entourage of supplies and wagons, etc., revive him? – vs.27b

  Jacob’s final resolve - - It is enough; my son Joseph is still alive.  I will go and see him before I die. – vs.28
