Lesson #2 - The Commissioning of Moses

Series: God's Man Moses - Israel's Exodus From Egypt

LESSON #2

THE COMMISSIONING OF MOSES

Standing On Holy Ground / Chapter Three (part one)

1. What happened one day while Moses was pasturing Jethro’s flocks? -  vs.1

Moses was tending Jethro’s sheep in the southwestern region of the north Sinai peninsula.

~ Jethro (aka Reuel/Ex.2:18) was a priest and chief of a clan called Kenites, part of the tribe of Midianites.

~ Jethro was Moses’ father-in-law - - the father of Moses’ wife, Zipporah.  cf. Ex.2:21

While shepherding the sheep, Moses came into the region of Horeb.

~ Horeb was known as “the mountain of God”, where Moses witnessed a theophany (appearance of God).

Mt. Horeb (aka Mt.Sinai) was also the location where Moses would later receive the Ten Commandments.  cf. Deut.5:1f.

~ Stephen notes that Moses was 40 years old when he fled Egypt to Midian (Acts 7:23).

According to Stephen (Acts 7:30), another 40 years transpired by the time of the burning bush.

2. How did God speak with Moses and what did He tell him? – vss.2-9

An angel of God appeared in a burning bush (burning but not consumed), which captured Moses’ attention.

~ Upon investigation, God called (spoke) to Moses from the midst of the bush.

Why did God tell Moses to remove his sandals?

~ God identified Himself at the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

~ How did Moses initially respond? – vs.6

What was the essence of God’s message to Moses concerning the  children of Israel in Egypt?

~ Note that God speaks of them as MY PEOPLE. – vs.7

~ I have seen the affliction … given heed to their cry … and am aware of their sufferings.

I have come down to deliver them from (Egypt)…and to bring them up to…a land flowing with milk and honey.

Returning to Pharaoh To Ask For Release / Chapter Three (part two)

1. What part was Moses to play in bringing about the exodus from Egypt? – vss.10-20

I will send you to Pharaoh.

~ Moses replied, saying with little confidence, Who am I? … and What shall I say? – cf. Ex.4:1 & 10

~ God gave Moses His assurance:  I will be with you…(I promise) you shall worship God at this mountain.

Moses was directed to go to Egypt to the sons of Israel and tell them:  I AM has sent me.

~ He was to meet with the elders of Israel and tell them that God had heard their cries and that He was concerned.

Moses was to have the elders of Israel accompany him to meet with Pharaoh to make a preliminary request.

~What was this request?

~Although God knew that Pharaoh would deny this request, God promised He would “twist Pharaoh’s arm”.

I will stretch out My hand, and strike Egypt with all My miracles…after that he will let you go.

2. God’s intention was not just to facilitate Israel’s exodus from Egypt, but to bring them out with riches. – vss.21-22

God would grant them favor in the sight of Egypt and the nation of Israel would not leave empty-handed.

~ The women were to ask for silver, gold and clothing from the Egyptian women.

Thus you will plunder the Egyptians. – cf. Ezk.39:10 / seize the plunder of those who plundered them
