Lesson #6 - Pray For One Another

Series: The One-Another Way

LESSON #6 – PRAY FOR ONE ANOTHER

A CHURCH EVER PRAYING

~ The New Testament is filled will exhortations to pray.

Honor, praise and thanksgivings to God remain the primary focus of our prayers, and this is as it should be.

Acts 1:14 notes, These all with one mind were continually devoting themselves to prayer...

Acts 2:42 adds, They were continually devoting themselves...to prayer.

~ This is also a place for personal prayers - - “Lord, help me!”.

But we also see, carved out in Scripture, an emphasis on the need to pray for one-another.

Acts 12:5 / So Peter was kept in prison, but prayer for him was being made fervently by the church to God.

How often do you pray for others?

Does this occur once in a blue moon or is it a regular part of our prayer life?

If we kept a record of the people you prayed for by name, how many would it be in a typical week?

Do we just pray for the sick and grieving?

} Can you site an example of a prayer with specificity made on behalf of another? |?

The example of Epaphras (Col.4:12) - -

laboring earnestly for you in his prayers, that you may stand perfect and fully assured in all the will of God.

 THE SUBJECTS OF OUR PRAYERS

~ The apostle Paul prayed frequently for others

cf. Rom.1:8-10;  1Cor.1:4-5;  Eph.1:15-16;  Philp.1:3-4;  Col.1:3-4 & 9-10;  1Thess.1:2 & 3:9;  2Thess.1:3 & 11  and  2Tim.1:3

~ Paul directs us to pray for all the saints (Eph.6::18) … and to pray for all men (mankind)/1Tim.2:1

While most of Paul's letters are addressed to churches (groups of Christians), he also prays for individuals.

e.g., Timothy (2Tim.1:3) … and Philemon, Apphia and Archippus (Phe.1-6).

Are we comfortable in asking others to pray for US?

~ This request for prayer for made often by the apostle Paul.

Brethren, pray for US / 1Thess.5:15 … Strive together in your prayers for ME / Rom.15:30 …

Pray for US / 2Thess.3:1-2 … Pray for US...I urge you all the more to do this / Heb.13:18-19

Devote yourselves to prayer...with an attitude of thanksgiving; praying at the same time for US / Col.4:2-3

Have you ever called on the elders to pray over you? - Js.5:14-15

Have you ever ask others to pray for you and your struggle with sin? - cf. Js.5:16

} What is the meaning of 1Jn.5:13-17? |

PRAYING FOR THOSE WE DON'T LIKE

How do you go about praying for those that you love (agape) but do not like?

Mt.5:44 / love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you

Lk.6:28 / bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you

~ Are these to be just imprecatory prayers beseeching a curse on our enemies?  cf. Ps.55:15;  58:6;  69:28  &  109:1-13
